Well, summer is officially here. This year, I am trying something new...I'm making herbal medicines. My background is entirely in the allopathic medical world, and a few years ago the idea of herbal medicines was something I just couldn't bring myself to consider.
But with age and experience, fortunately, comes another point of view. I am decidedly against the idea of using medicinal herbs as a simple replacement for Western pharmaceuticals. This commonplace viewpoint negates the whole world of herbal medicine and is just too simple for me.
And yes, I don't pretend, even though I have over 20 years experience as a mid-level medical clinican, to know much about herbal medicine. So I am embracing beginner's mind as I study and observe and enter into this ancient universe of plant medicine.
The writings of renowned herbalists Matthew Wood, Stephen Harrod Buhner, Michael Moore (of the Southwestern School of Botanical Medicine, not the filmmaker!) and others light my path. My mullein and mimosa tinctures sit in a cool, darkened closet, awaiting decanting. Goldenrod leaves lie scattered on a screen, drying in the warm summer air. I taste the partially dried leaf...sensations of green, slightly bitter, aromatic anise fill my soul.
Stephen Harrod Buhner says that "eating the wild" is one of our greatest fears. But with this wild communion we can invite the Wild Redeemer in to cleanse us of our civilized ways and we can taste nature once more.
